Contrary to popular belief, a colon flush isn’t limited to invasive procedures like a colonoscopy. It’s also not limited to $10 smoothies at your local juice bar. You can actually put together a homemade colon cleanse using ingredients you already have at home or can acquire at a nearby grocery store. Giving your digestive system a spring cleaning doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg.

Drink a Lot of Water

At its most basic, colon cleansing at home requires nothing more than water. If you have distilled or spring water, then you can do a homemade colon cleanse right now.

Why is water so good for you? From a digestive standpoint, H2O induces peristalsis, or the contraction of the intestines and tubular muscular system. This helps food move along the digestive tract.

This is partly why doctors recommend at least eight glasses of water a day. However, during a cleansing cycle, we recommend bumping that number to 10 to 12. If you’re physically active, then aim for a whole gallon.

Finally, stick to plain water. Yes, we know it’s as tasteless as tasteless gets. However, refrain from drink mixes that contain additives and artificial flavors.

Eat a Lot of Fiber

By fiber, we’re not talking about processed cereal bars with fortified artificial vitamins and minerals. We’re not even talking about whole grain foods, which are heavily genetically modified. Studies, in fact, have linked modern wheat products to inflammation, a primary cause of indigestion.

By fiber, we mean whole fruits. The skin of fruits like apples and pears are a good fiber source. You can also add more veggies like broccoli, peas, and artichokes. In lieu of rice or bread, we suggest loading up your dinner plate with a veggie and fruit combo medley.

Why is fiber so helpful as a colon cleanse home remedy? It assists by providing bulk to your stools, thus shortening the time it takes for waste to travel through the digestive tract. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine also recommends fiber for offsetting risk of colorectal cancer.

Eat Yogurt

Stick to sugar-free unpasteurized yogurt. As you may know, yogurt is a terrific source of probiotics. This is a way to introduce live and active cultures that aid in digestion. Yogurt, being made from dairy, is also rich in calcium, which discourages the production of harmful cells in the colon wall. If plain yogurt doesn’t cut it for you, then add some natural sweetener in the form of whole sliced fruits. The probiotics in the yogurt and fiber and vitamins in the fruits make this an excellent DIY colon cleanse, not to mention a yummy snack.

Try the Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse is a homemade colon cleanse popularized by holistic medicine practitioner Stanley Burroughs. Several different iterations of the recipe are available, though it generally involves lemon juice sweetened with natural maple syrup. A pinch of cayenne pepper is also added. During the DIY colon cleanse cycle, you would drink anywhere from six to 12 glasses of this concoction, consuming a total of three to six whole lemons.

Does it work? Despite being highly acidic, lemons actually have the opposite effect once ingested and alkalizes the body. A highly acidic stomach is unhealthy and creates a breeding environment for harmful bacteria. As far as the maple syrup goes, we believe you can do without it due to the high sugar content.

Drink Raw Juice

A colon cleanse home remedy is just as good as an overpriced smoothie from Jamba Juice. This is where your blender becomes your ultimate companion. Raw juice can consist of a number of whole fruits and vegetables. No matter how you go about it, just keep the ingredients natural.

We recommend green leafy vegetables. You can also throw in a few slices of apples and lemons to make the taste a bit more palatable. Leafy greens contain chlorophyll that aids in toxin removal.

With a typical raw juice diet, you refrain entirely from cooked and processed foods for the duration of the cleanse.

Go Herbal

Are you a coffee or tea drinker? Most people in western countries fall into the former. However, tea is an antioxidant powerhouse; most variants contain herbs that act as a natural laxative. Other useful herbs for a colon cleanse home remedy include milk thistle and marshmallow root. These compounds help form a mucilaginous substance in the intestines that help shuttle out waste.

If you’re unsure which tea is best, you can always stick to the widely popular green tea. Aside from suppressing appetite, studies also show that green tea may reduce risk of colorectal cancer. Other studies show that green tea and an assortment of other herbs may reduce Crohn’s disease.

What About Supplements?

Do supplements have any place in a DIY colon cleanse? Yes, they do, but this is hugely conditional. For supplements to qualify – at least in our opinion – they must be all-natural much like the methods we just mentioned. Unfortunately, very few supplements meet this standard. Digestive Refresh, however, is an exception in a market saturated with synthetic products.
